[Pic 4] view from the cutting
(Aug 1982)
I've included this view purely for the profiles it gives of the mill buildings. But right behind the camera - literally -
is the big deep main pit - which is in very poor condition and the remains of the old water balance uphaulage incline from within it mostly quarried
away, plus the course of its chain hauled replacement is barely obvious. Amazing to think that product had to be uphauled to this point even
after a deeper entrance into the pit base was made - see below. |
[Pic 5] Rhos Quarry - Drainage tunnel (Aug 1982)
With the pit ever deepening a drainage tunnel was cut from the pit
base out into the hillside well down from the original (mill) level. This tunnel was also used as a well needed exit route for waste. But, even this
tunnel was eventually above pit bottom level and waste hade to be uphauled to it within the pit. The pic above shows the cutting leading from the
tunnel entrance - now well over grown. |
[Pic 6] Rhos Quarry - Unused waterwheel housing (Aug 1982)
Close to the drainage tunnel is this unused waterwheel housing -
built upon a large area made up of waste coming out of the tunnel. This waterwheel was part of a plan (never fulfilled) to build a new mill at
this lower level - along with a further plan to drive an even lower drainage tunnel into the ever deepening pit - although a start was
actually made on the latter, it was never completed either. |
