[Pic 7] Rhos Slate Quarry - Mill and Cutting (Aug 1982)

More of the cutting, looking further back from the Mill yard. Not sure what the raised building beyond the mill was for but behind that is a fine block built raised leat leading to the mill wheel. Behind the mill is an upper series of waste tips that fan out from the edge of the pit near to the sheave mountings for the chain uphaulage. Nowadays, sadly, the buildings on view here (as aleady mentioned) are in a much more ruinous state - especially the raised building which has almost completely lost any remains of its roof. At this rate of decay they will soon be nothing but a few piles of rubble!

Further down the hillside, below the main waste tips, is this cutting leading to a drainage tunnel through to the pit. Once opened this tunnel alleviated the need to pump the pit dry. Later, however, the pit descended below this level and a further (lower) drainage tunnel was started but never completed before closure of the quarry.

Also coming out of the drainage tunnel was a good quantity of waste that built up a new level, on which yet another water wheel was planned to power a (possible) new mill. Only the wheel pit was built, as seen above, as the plan never came to fruition.

Finally, is this view looking over the valley from the exit tramway connection to the Foel inclines. Note the lower tips and the mellow hills of the area. Down below, out of view, is Pont Cyfyng and heading eastwards (to Betws-y-Coed) is Telfords classic A5 road.
