Cwmorthin was connected to the Ffestiniog Railway (by the early 1860's) via a tramway, that ran from the Lower Mills area, to a junction with the FR at Tan Y Grisiau. Two lengthy inclines were built to overcome the drop in altitude and the pic above shows the first - Tai Muriau Incline.

From the base of Tai Muriau Incline the tramway headed off along this short embankment, then entered rock a cutting (behind camera - see Pic 14) followed by a short run to the head of the Tan Y Grisiau Incline. Note how the embankment was deemed a good place to support a telegraph pole long after closure.
