[Pic 18] Cwmorthin Quarry - Giant waste tips (1987)

Viewed from Wrysgan Qry, this pic shows the layout of the main tips, with the big main incline dropping down, from the very top, to the Lower Mills level. Nowadays, following vigorous untopping of the workings since this pic was taken, all of the tips on the left side of this pic (and the incline) have changed dramatically with the tipping of new waste rock. Note; this was yet another trip to Cwmorthin following heavy rain (12th Sept for the record) as can be seen by the Afon Cwmorthin wandering its way through the Lower Mills. My notes say it had rained for the previous 3 days almost non stop. Again, typical Ffestiniog weather !

Primarily this is a pic of Llyn Cwmorthin - but it also serves to show the lake level area, the older open workings up on the hillside, and the level 5 waste tips that dominate the scene. Also note how the lake level tips fan out into the lake itself.
