[Pic 16] Cwmorthin Quarry - Lower Mill Channeled river II (1985)

Another view of the channeled river course (3 year later, and just around the corner from, that of Pic 1) showing just how elaborate the slate walling was. From the degraded abutment (right) a wooden bridge once spanned the river here. This carried a tramway from the Old Lower Mill section to the long tips that run south at this level.

[Pic 17] Cwmorthin Quarry - Lower Mill Channeled river III (1987)

This view (5 years later and from the other side of the arched tunnel to that in Pic 1) shows the again swollen Afon Cwmorthin as it passes under the Lower Mill site. It also shows that by 1987 the archway was very degraded. The wall in view is the western wall of the London Mill section and beyond that the floor of the mill had long since collapsed leaving a gaping hole. Crossing over the archway on this side of the wall a tramway once ran to the Southern Mill section - originally located off camera to the right, but completely demolished as long ago as the 1930s. As mentioned previously this area has since been landscaped. All the arched tunnel remains seen here are gone, the river course has slightly been altered, and behind the camera location now is an artificial lake.
