Cwmorthin Floor 5 Back Vein incline:-
Dug out my 1988 pic of the Floor 5 Back Vein incline to go with some notes that are additional to those in the Cwmorthin section, which is awaiting a rebuild:- This steam powered uphaulage incline at one point descended all the way down to Floor E - but was only single tracked beyond Floor 1. Waste went all the way up to the Floor 5 tips while slabs only raised to Floor 1. Enters underground from Floor 4 down with, at first, rails holding slabs overhead for protection from the tips above and a fine wall holding back the waste, this wall running down (on the right) from 5 to 4. Also in this view are the Floor 4 Barracks and Weighhouse remains plus the curved tramway cutting to Floor 4 adit. All machinery from this incline went to Oakley site in 1900. Later, 1936, Incline was rebuilt but truncated - Oakley only using Floor 1 down to E. Above this was walled off. Across this scene, descending right to left, was once the old Floor 5 to Floor one gravity incline. Much of this area destroyed by modern untopping shortly after photo was taken. The excellent book 'Cwmorthin Slate Quarry' (Graham Isherwood / Adit Publications) goes into detail regarding this incline as well as diagrams of its layout. |
